NHL free agency tracker 2020: Live updates on news, rumors, signings and trades

The 2020 NHL offseason is here and free agency should certainly be a doozy.

Some of the biggest names in the game — i.e., Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug and Taylor Hall — are available at the right price and term. And have you seen the goalie market? Henrik Lundqvist, Braden Holtby, Cam Talbot, Anton Khudobin and Jacob Markstrom are just some of the veteran backstops looking for new homes.

While a few teams need to reach the cap floor — looking at you, Senators — other teams have little wiggle room when it comes to adding pieces that could push them from pretender to contender or protecting their top restricted free agents.

With a flat cap amid a pandemic, what will go down is anyone’s guess. Either way, it’ll be quite a ride.

(All times Eastern)

Saturday

8:28 p.m. — Maple Leafs keep adding sandpaper to their roster, this time singing brand-new Stanley Cup champion Zach Bogosian for one year, $1 million.

7:23 p.m. — Trevor van Riemsdyk is reportedly joining the Capitals at one-year, $800,000. GM Brian MacLellan continues to tinker with his roster. (This was made official at 8:30 p.m.).

7:13 p.m — TRADE: Official. Avalanche send Nikita Zadorov and Anton Lindholm to the Blackhawks for Brandon Saad and Dennis Gilbert. Per the press release, Chicago will retain $1,000,000 of Saad’s $6,000,000 salary next season and Zadorov, who was a restricted free agent, signed his qualifying offer of $3,200,000 for 2020-21.

7:05 p.m. — Nothing to see here. Just an agent breaking trade news.

7:03 p.m. — Sabres re-sign Brandon Montour for one-year, $3.85 million.

6:53 p.m. — TRADE: Devils and Leafs swap forwards with Andreas Johnsson going to New Jersey and Joey Anderson heading to Toronto. Anderson is a restricted free agent (10.2c) while the Devils will take on Johnsson’s contract (three more years with a $3.4 million cap hit). It’s a good move for Toronto who needs to clear cap space.

6:30 p.m. — So, the Oilers signed Mike Smith for one year and, let’s just say, Oiler fans are not happy.

5:51 p.m. — Avalanche re-sign restricted free agent Valeri Nichushkin to a two-year deal while the Maple Leafs add former Capitals forward Travis Boyd to a one-year contract.

4:49 p.m. — Dog pics are the best pics.

4:48 p.m. — Things are starting to pick up again as both Jesper Fast and Cody Eakin appear to be on the move.

4:29 p.m. — Louis Domingue and his baking is heading to Calgary too on a two-way. He’s the third Canucks player to make the switch to the C of Red.

4:07 p.m. — TRADE: Predators send Austin Watson to the Senators for their fourth-round pick (originally from Colorado) in next year’s draft.

3:47 p.m. — After last year’s under-paying contract (one year at $1 million), NYC’s Kevin Labanc gets a pay upgrade with a four-year, $18.9 million deal.

3:28 p.m. — Blue Jackets sign Koivu for one year, $1.5 million. He’ll bring a veteran presence and support down the middle.

2:49 p.m. — According to multiple reports, Jets have signed Nate Thompson to a one-year, $750,000 contract. He’ll add a little grit to the line-up for Paul Maurice.

2:37 p.m. — In a surprise move, it looks like Mikko Koivu isn’t going to hang up the skates. Sounds like he’s heading to Columbus for a year. The 37-year-old forward spent his entire 15-year career with the Wild.

2:17 p.m — Barrie signing is official at one year, $3.75 million AAV.

1:23 p.m. — Red Wings are rebuilding through free agency. Steve Yzerman adds Troy Stecher from Vancouver to the blue line. He already signed Thomas Greiss in net, Jon Merrill on the blue line and Bobby Ryan up front.

1:01 p.m. — Wild re-sign Jordan Greenway

1:00 p.m. — Tyson Barrie is on the move to Edmonton. It’s a good deal for both as the Oilers upgrade their weak defensive core and Barrie gets a one-year contract to show that he’s still a top defensive guy in the league.

12:48 p.m. — This isn’t a gamble — the Vegas Golden Knights are going to be money in 2020-21.

11:41 a.m. — Don Sweeney’s press conference last night was postponed and now we know why — Bruins add Craig Smith to their forward group for three years, $3.1 million cap hit.

11:22 a.m. — Thomas Greiss is heading to HockeyTown for two-years, $7.2 million after the Red Wings let long-time netminder Jimmy Howard go this offseason. The now-former Islanders goalie, Greiss is a good addition in net for the young team. He split the William M. Jennings Trophy with Robin Lehner in 2019 and was a reliable 1B who deserved more playing time than he got. He’ll get that now in Detroit.

10:53 a.m. — It looks like Tyson Barrie could be heading out west. While he struggled early on in Toronto, he did perform better when Sheldon Keefe took over in November. Canucks do need some defense, especially now that Chris Tanev has gone to Calgary.

10:34 a.m. — Andre Burakovsky stays in Colorado for two more years.

4:45 a.m. — Catching up on a Friday night signing: Veteran goaltender Corey Crawford joins the Devils on a two-year deal worth $7.8 million ($3.9 million AAV). He is joining New Jersey after playing his entire NHL career (13 years) with the Blackhawks. Crawford appeared in 40 games (39 starts) for Chicago this past season, posting a 2.77 GAA and .917 save percentage. He also played in nine postseason games after a bout with COVID-19. Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald said Crawford, 35, will be counted on to provide leadership for the team’s young core. Mackenzie Blackwood, 23, is the incumbent No. 1 goalie in New Jersey.

Friday

8:38 p.m. — Torey Krug is off the board; the Blues sign the defenseman to a seven-year, $45.5 million contract ($6.5 million AAV). That means Alex Pietrangelo is on his way out of St. Louis; Vegas was rumored to be a suitor for him earlier in the day. (UPDATE: Blues GM Doug Armstrong told reporters that he hadn’t ruled out bringing back Pietrangelo, though he said the club would need to get «very creative.»)

7:32 p.m. — The Leafs add defenseman T.J. Brodie, one of the top players on the UFA market. The contract is for four years and $20 million ($5 million average annual value).

6:42 p.m. — A few of the bigger names have found new homes: Jacob Markstrom (Canucks to Flames), Braden Holtby (Capitals to Canucks) and Henrik Lundqvist (Rangers to Capitals). Alex Pietrangelo, Torey Krug and Taylor Hall still remain available for the right price.

4:33 p.m. — Bruins bring back Kevan Miller. Torey Krug still remains a free agent.

4:17 p.m. — Flames announce the signing of Jacob Markstrom for six years, $36 million.

SN’s analysis: A good get for the Flames as Markstrom is coming off a Vezina-worthy performance (he finished fourth in voting). It’s expected he’ll get the majority of the work between the pipes and will help solidify a position that has been a little shaky for a while in Calgary.

3:57 p.m. — Capitals add Justin Schultz for $8 million, two years as things slow down considerably.

3:23 p.m. — Not a bad decision by Grabner.

3:20 p.m. — Tobias Rieder reportedly heading to Buffalo.

3:09 p.m. — Stanley Cup champion Kevin Shattenkirk is on the move again it appears — and reportedly to the Ducks for three years.

3:01 p.m. — Mark Borowiecki is heading to Nashville for two years and $4 million.

SN’s analysis: Veteran presence and adds a bit of grit on the blue line. Plus, he’s a good human.

2:59 p.m. — Well, well, well.

2:34 p.m. — Penguins sign Evan Rodrigues. He was part of the Kasperi Kapanen trade and was not offered a qualifying offer by the Maple Leafs.

2:32 p.m. — Khudobin officially returning to Dallas at three years, $10 million ($3.33 million AAV).

2:15 p.m. — Senators sign recently acquired netminder Matt Murray to a four-year deal.

SN’s analysis: Smart move by the Stars as Khudobin was not only well-liked in the locker room, but fills in nicely next to Ben Bishop in a 1A/1B role. Plus, as we all know now, he can be a full No. 1 if Bishop cannot go.

2:14 p.m. — After being bought out by Columbus, Wennberg is on the move.

1:55 p.m. — Well, Khudobin is going home. According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, he’s staying in Dallas at three years at $3.5 million per.

1:47 p.m. — Motte Girl Summer is now Motte Girl Fall. Tyler Motte signs a two-year, $2.45 million contract with the Canucks.

1:47 p.m.  — Khudobin may be staying in Texas.

1:37 p.m. — How the market is going so far.

1:30 p.m. — Oilers add forward Kyle Turris, goaltender Anton Forsberg and Alan Quine (who moves up the road from Calgary).

1:15 p.m. — Looks like the Markstrom Era is officially over in Vancouver. (Holtby deal official at 1:42 p.m.).

SN’s analysis: Holtby will be a fantastic 1A/1B with Thatcher Demko. The youngster will get a chance to play while Travis Green will have the Stanley Cup champion as a safety net. Plus this:

1 p.m. — Cam Talbot on the move to Minnesota. Calgary looking for a netminder now.

SN’s analysis: Cam Talbot is a solid netminder who had a stellar run during bubble hockey.

12:52 p.m. — Henrik Lundqvist heading down to the DMV, officially.

SN’s analysis: Smart move by the Caps to add a veteran — Hall of Famer — to work with and push young stud Ilya Samsonov. The Capitals are also a team in win-now mode and Lundqvist is hungry to finally get that Cup.

12:35 p..m. — Markstrom was fourth in Vezina voting for 2019-20 but this may be too much term.

12:31 p.m. — Wayne Simmonds deal with Leafs is official.

SN’s analysis: Fantastic move for Toronto. GM Kyle Dubas repeatedly has mentioned since the Leafs were booted from the bubble that he wants his team to be tougher to play against. Translation: Sandpaper. That’s just what Simmonds brings. But don’t be fooled: He plays a gritty game but also has a scoring touch.

12:28 p.m. — Florida getting some grit on the backend.

12:23 p.m. — Back-to-back championships for the Lightning?

12:22 p.m. — Bobby Ryan deal is official.

SN’s analysis: Great move for both Ryan and the Red Wings. A guy with a knack for finding the back of the net during his career, he’ll add a veteran presence and will be a solid mentor to a young Detroit squad. For Ryan, it’s a fresh start.

12:06 p.m. — Bobby Ryan may be heading to HockeyTown. The Athletic’s Craig Custance reporting that it’s a one-year deal for $1 million.

12:06 p.m. — Sportsnet’s Anthony Stewart reporting Maple Leafs are getting their sandpaper. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun is saying it’s a one-year deal with a NMC for the Toronto native.

12:05 p.m. — Interesting Tyler Johnson news.

12:02 p.m. — And just like that, OEL is not going to Vancouver.

12 p.m. — Here we go!

11:52 a.m. —   Torey Krug staying in Boston?

And is Oliver Ekman-Larsson now officially heading to Vancouver?

11:21 a.m. — Paul Stastny is heading back to the Jets. Vegas Golden Knights ship him to the Peg in exchange for defenceman Carl Dahlstrom and a 2022 conditional fourth-rounder.

TE INTERESA>>  El Atlético quiere 'pescar' en LaLiga en el Valencia y en el Villarreal

SN’s analysis: No sleight of hand here. It’s pretty clear that Vegas is clearing cap space for something big. There have been rumors that the Golden Knights will be going after top free agent Alex Pietrangelo. The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford noted on NHL Network that it’s one of his, if not the top, destination choices for the defenseman.

As for Winnipeg, it adds center depth, specifically at 2C (something it’s been missing since Bryan Little went down; his future status is uncertain for now). Stastny knows Paul Maurice and his systems, as he spent a short time with the club following his 2018 acquisition at the deadline and potted 15 points in 17 playoff games. He also played and had success with  Patrik Laine, so it may signal the Finnish winger is sticking around.

NHL offseason trade tracker 2020: List of deals completed

11:07 a.m. — GM Jim Benning has repeatedly said that he wants to keep Jacob Markstrom between the pipes in Vancouver. NHL Network’s Brian Lawton says he’s heard a team has offered him seven years. Elliotte Friedman reports on NHL Network that Markstrom wants to stay in Vancouver but Calgary and Edmonton will make a push.

11:03 a.m. — «Door isn’t closed» is another cliche saying that we’ll hear a lot.

10:18 a.m. — What’s old is new. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports the move will give Vegas a chance to go after Alex Pietrangelo.

10:15 a.m. — «The King» to the Caps? Looks like he likes playing in red, white and blue.

9:48 a.m. — Maple Leafs wanted to be a tougher team to play against.

Thursday

9:30 p.m. — Devils get defenseman Ryan Murray for a 2021 fifth-rounder.

GM Jarmo Kekalainen making some space, could a big signing be in the works? They do have a few RFA’s like Pierre-Luc Dubois.

8:05 p.m. —  «We’ll circle back» will be a key term in the next few days.

7 p.m. — The Canadiens lock up Josh Anderson for seven years.

SN’s analysis: It’s a lot of term for someone who has a history of injuries — Anderson missed most of 2019-20 following shoulder surgery — and has only played one full 82-game slate in his career. He also only has 115 points in 267 career games but does have some upside.

The deal also leaves Montreal without a lot of cap space in free agency, $5.368 million per CapFriendly  which compares his new deal to those of three Stanley Cup winners and the player who just won the Selke.

5:55 p.m. — We wouldn’t be surprised if Pietrangelo is back manning the blue line for St. Louis next season.

5:39 p.m. —  Cam Talbot was solid in net for the Flames in the bubble and would be a quality 1B for any team — maybe a Stars team that loses Anton Khudobin? Him going to market is expected; it has long been rumored that Calgary wants to court Jacob Markstrom.

4:24 p.m. — 41 is the new 21.
