‘Selling The OC’s’ Wedding Dress Scene Is a Full Circle Moment for an Iconic ‘Project Runway’ Designer

Selling the OC is not a subtle show. It’s a show designed to grab your attention with luxury real estate, complicated drink orders, lots of shouting, and fashions guaranteed to make your eyes pop. Between all of the glitz and glam and royalty-free girlboss anthems, there’s truly a lot for one to pay attention to in every episode.

However, there’s a scene in Episode 2 of Selling the OC Season 2 that will get a big reaction from Project Runway fans — a much bigger reaction than any office make-out story, the arrival of a fourth Alexandra, or any moment of shade from Brandi. The moment in question? Oh, it’s when we find out that Alex Jarvis is getting her wedding dress from Michael Costello!

Yes, that Michael Costello. The Michael Costello, from Project Runway Season 8 and Project Runway All Stars Season 1. The designer who, over the course of Season 8, was edited to have a journey from clueless underdog to unintentional villain to surprise frontrunner and then to heartbreaking underdog. In all 20 seasons of Project Runway (now streaming on Peacock, although in highly edited form), there’s no one like Michael Costello.

And there he is, on Selling the OC — not that Selling the OC is gonna list his resume for viewers.

That’s “Fashion Designer/Reality TV Legend,” okay?

Costello does kind of get clocked by another guest star, Chelsea Lazkani, on loan from Selling Sunset. She says, “I’ve known about your work for years. You’re an OG. You go way, way back.” Costello nods, clearly flattered, but Lazkani is telling the truth! Michael Costello is one reason why Project Runway Season 8 is one of the all-time greatest seasons of competition TV ever aired. He won a challenge and then, in the very next episode, had Gretchen and a team of mean girls gang up on him and tear his work and his aptitude apart in front of the judges!

Then Ivy bizarrely claimed that Costello sabotaged the audience voting in a bridesmaid dress makeover challenge. It wasn’t until Mondo and Michael C. were paired together in a team challenge that the rest of the cast — and the show — started coming around to him. I mean, that episode started with Mondo flat-out telling Costello to his face that he was not happy with this assignment and that Costello was a terrible designer.

By the end of the episode? The two were basically best buds.

Now look where he is thirteen years later, with his own atelier in Los Angeles filled with his signature luxurious gowns, a specialty that we saw him hone on Project Runway. He’s over here selling wedding gowns for $50,000! And when I asked Alex Jarvis about working with Michael Costello on this very gown, you better believe she gushed.

“Michael’s amazing. He’s a creative genius,” Alex Jarvis told Decider. “He can make incredible gowns overnight. The first time I met with him, he sketched out what I was vocalizing to him, what I wanted, and he literally sketched it with pencil in less than five minutes. I was just blown away. I gave him a lot of creative liberty on the dress and was just like, ‘You know what? Just you do you. Wow me.’ He’s such an amazing person.”

What really makes me happy about this moment, as he assists Alex Jarvis with her fitting and proudly shows off his work, is how this moment plays for all of us who remember exactly how Michael Costello left Project Runway in Season 8. When he found out he wasn’t going to show his collection in the finale, that he’d come in fourth (out of the strongest group of designers the show has ever seen, mind you), he had a complete emotional breakdown.

He worried that this “failure” would lead to him being forced to move back home, where he would have to give up his identity and get married again in order to fit in with his family.* For any gay man who has struggled with finding the strength to be themselves despite what their family thinks (hello), Costello’s reaction to his elimination cut like a knife. It’s a wound I still feel when I rewatch that moment over a dozen years later.

And look at him now!

I’m so proud of him, and I’m so happy that he is making so much money doing his own thing… and that he never has to work in a team challenge ever again.

* If you want to see this moment, though, you’ll have to buy Project Runway Season 8 on DVD (of course I have). Peacock and Freevee, the only ways to watch Project Runway digitally, only has the edited versions of Seasons 8-16, which cut 20 minutes from every episode. That includes this portion of Michael Costello’s post-elimination interview. Do better, Peacock, Freevee, and whoever is controlling the streaming and digital sales rights to Project Runway!
